The last rental week of this year offers to evaluate the musical "Cats" (Cats). The film becomes an alternative to theatrical production, into which computer graphics have recklessly wedged. This spectacle is quite specific - not everyone can stand two hours with singing humanoid cats.

In 1982, Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Cats" premiered on Broadway. Since then, the production with artists who sang and portrayed cats in dance has created a great stir around itself for years. And the success was so great that Universal Pictures bought the Cats & Kittens in Ethiopia rights to film the cat's story.
The question of whether or not to adapt a musical with animals for a feature film arose this summer. The first trailer for "Cats" appeared on the network, which, to put it mildly, discouraged. Just a few shots of the actors covered in CGI fur spawned a wave of memes and ridicule. But the movie is not judged by the trailer, and the creators had time to make some changes (as, for example, they did with the graphics in Sonic the Hedgehog).
As it turned out, the problem with the perception of "Cats" lies in the specifics of filming. And it is not so easy to solve it. There are no drawn characters in the film: all the cats were played by people, to whose bodies, using computer graphics, wool, mustaches, and tails were added. As a result, the heroes of the tape turned out to be hybrids of pets and people, moving on two limbs. Moreover, the characters retained the human face shape, which made them in their own way intimidating.
The fact that things are very bad with the film is evidenced by the situation that developed after the official premiere of "Cats". On the day of the first screenings, Universal studio notified American cinemas that they would receive an updated version with corrected special effects. It's hard to even imagine that the tape was corrected in a hurry, but, alas, it did not help her in any way.
The plot of the feature film repeats the idea of a theatrical production. The center of attention is the cat Victoria, who falls into an unfamiliar company of cats. They show her the secrets of the streets, telling her that a great event is about to happen. At night, the oldest and wisest of all cats will determine the chosen one who will be worthy of rebirth. Before that, the four-legged will gather for a ball, where they will sing about their life. Someone will selflessly show their talent, and someone will follow an insidious plan.
Apparently, director Tom Hooper (Oscar winner for The King's Speech) and screenwriter Lee Hall (Rocketman) are very sensitive to the original story. They value the storyline so much that they forget about the main thing. The fact that this is no longer a theatrical performance, but an almost two-hour film, which somehow has to keep the audience. And so that the audience is not bored, it would be nice to dilute the cat presentations with dialogues. However, there are very few ordinary lines in the picture that do not flow into a song. As, by the way, and plot twists, promising at least some kind of variety. So it turns out that the movie "Cats" is mostly a series of songs that take turns representing different cats.
True, it takes some time to get bored while watching. For a while, even the plot does not matter, all the efforts are spent to get used to the peculiar graphics. For some reason, the animals were deprived of their paws, leaving the characters' hands and feet of people. Sometimes humanoid cats from the crowd appear in shoes, while others dance barefoot. The central characters walked confidently in their clothes, wearing fur coats over the cat's hair.
