Toshiba Flash

Group review of Toshiba flash drives with USB 3.0 interface. Toshiba U301, U303, U361 and U382 Series Models USB sticks have become one of the longest-lived means of transferring information between PCs. The first such drives appeared at the time of widespread floppy disks and were then no less exotic than floppy disks are now. One or two years before the mass distribution of "writing" CD-drives, flash drives have already become a familiar device for advanced and not too constrained buyers. The boom in rewritable CDs and DVDs has faded a long time ago, and in new computers and laptops, an optical drive has not been necessary for many years, which cannot be said about USB ports. As a result, now for transferring small and medium (up to several tens of GB) data volumes, flash drives seem to be the best choice, and for transferring or storing hundreds of GB, it is already worth considering external HDDs, the price of which in terms of volume is very attractive. There are also external SSDs, but their market niche is similar to that o Toshiba Flash f flash drives 20 years ago - good, but expensive. At the same time, HDDs are inferior to flash drives in weight and dimensions, and they are badly treated to falls / shocks, in contrast to even the most inexpensive flash drives. So today we are considering a product of "mass demand", flash drives with a volume of 32-64 GB. Moreover, these are popular and relevant models, since all reviewers are equipped with a USB 3.0 interface. Toshiba TransMemory U301 32GB (THN-U301W0320E4) Toshiba TransMemory U303 32GB (THN-U303W0320E4) Toshiba TransMemory U303 64GB (THN-U303W0640E4) Toshiba TransMemory-MX U361 32GB (THN-U361W0320M4) Toshiba TransMemory-MX U361 64GB (THN-U361K0640M4) Toshiba TransMemory-EX U382 32GB (THN-U382W0320E4) All flash drives come in a blister pack with an outer carton and are manufactured in the Philippines. The exception was the model TransMemory-EX U382, originally from Taiwan. The flash drives are new and arrived for the test in a sealed package, only the U303 64 GB package was opened and used earlier. Even the most affordable reviewers are protected by Toshiba's five-year warranty, in this respect they are no different from more expensive products. Note that the linear read speed is normalized only for the U361 and U382 series, and the linear write speed is only normalized for the U382. It remains to check the declared characteristics and evaluate the capabilities of inexpensive flash drives. What if they, too, will be able to surprise with their agility? A flash drive with a classic design: a translucent cap, an opaque matte plastic body. The rough finish does not collect fingerprints and resists fine scuffs. In the place where the two halves of the case are joined, there is a seam that is noticeable to the touch. There is a hole for attaching a strap, there is no disk activity LED - one of the signs of economy. There is no additional software, in the Windows OS the available volume to the user is 28.8 GB. Speed characteristics are not standardized and looking at the test results it becomes clear why. Streaming read performance is quite good for a low-cost device and is well over 70 MB / s, but writing at 9 MB / s is already unsatisfactory by modern standards. Even 10-year-old flash drives with a USB 2.0 interface often produce 12-18 MB / s. If you often write large amounts of data, this flash drive is not for you. Models of this family have lost the protective cap, and now not only the case, but also the USB 3.0 connector is made of plastic. The case gives the impression of being strong enough, but the outer plastic parts of the connector bend easily under pressure, so you should be careful when connecting the flash drive to the port. The matte white finish is resistant to fingerprints and minor scratches. There is an eyelet for a strap, there is no LED in this family either. The amount available to the user for drives with a capacity of 32 and 64 GB is 28.8 and 58.1 GB, respectively. The speed indicators have almost doubled in comparison with the U301 family, and regardless of the volume. Streaming read and write performance exceeds 130 and 20 MB / s, respectively. As a result, reading occurs at a speed that is very decent for inexpensive models, and although writing has improved, it is still at the level of good flash drives with a USB 2.0 interface. I wonder how the older models are doing? Controller: Phison PS2251-07 (32GB), PS2251-03 (64GB) https://jiji.ug/kampala/cds-and-dvds/toshiba-flash-pw4tJ9r4jPMMqfpEZTReFE1b.html
