With an average of 400 surgeries per year, Carson is making significant advances in medicine, including refining the rare hemispherectomy, the removal of one hemisphere of the brain, which is used in severe cases of epilepsy or a brain tumor. 1987 - A team of 70 surgeons under his leadership performs the first ever successful operation to separate head-fused Siamese twins.
